Review Process of Partner Organizations

Every three years, United Way invites the community to be part of a 5 week, rigorous review process of the organizations applying for United Way funding. The review process is fueled by more than 160 volunteers, donors and issue area experts.  Each organization applying for funding is examined based on the strength of their governance, fiscal accountability, and capacity to create the outcomes United Way seeks to fund.   This sort of open, community led, analysis of organizations is unique to United Way and ensures that every dollar we invest creates the greatest possible impact in the community.

Testimonials from agency review volunteers

"As a donor, I was very pleased to see how detailed the review process is. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience to help determine which agencies were providing the greatest benefit to the community."

"It was overall a fantastic experience. It gives me an excellent window into how diligently the United Way reviews grants and how seriously it takes the task of determining who will get funding. It makes me feel more engaged with the United Way to know that my contributions are invested well."

"I enjoyed the opportunity to review 5 similar agencies against the IYO white paper. The training was good and [United Way staff] did a terrific job facilitating the debrief both in terms of quality and efficiency. I was so inspired that I have applied to serve as a volunteer ... at one of the agencies."

"It was a lot of reading, but the assessment process seemed well organized and the orientation was helpful. I liked the opportunity to discuss and do the final ratings as a group. The group insights and opinions resulted in a more equitable rating for all the organizations."
