MEDIA IN MODERATION

The activities in this section teach children about the messages they see and hear through advertising, television, and the pictures and other information on food packages. The activities begin by encouraging children to limit the amount of time they spend being inactive and watching television and then teach children how to translate advertising and food package claims so that they can make healthier choices. The goal of this section is not to teach children to be calorie counters, but to teach them how to be aware of the types of foods they choose.

Things to keep in mind when doing activities in this section:

  • Ask children to bring in a variety of clean food packages with the nutrition labels on them. Keep the packages for use in several of the activities in this section.
