Child Assessment Institute 2009

Promoting Positive Outcomes for Children

Boy with TrucksOn March 20, 2009 the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) and United Way of Massachusetts Bay & Merrimack Valley brought together more than 250 Massachusetts child care providers and administrators to the second Child Assessment Institute in order to address risks threatening the school readiness of Massachusetts children. Research shows that the achievement gap emerges long before children enter kindergarten. Children who encounter a significant number of risk factors have a higher likelihood of falling behind other children in terms of social, emotional and cognitive developmental outcomes.

One of the goals of the Child Assessment Institute was to prepare child care professionals to identify areas of developmental concern in children as early as possible, determine the types of interventions that a child may need and evaluate whether those interventions are working. This is the second year that United Way has co-sponsored the Child Assessment Institute with EEC. The Institute is one of many partnerships that United Way has forged with the Department.  United Way has been intentional about aligning our standards with those set forth by EEC, and we are excited to once again partner with the state on this statewide endeavor.
