How Newton-Wellesley Hospital Lives United
Newton-Wellesley Hospital takes an active role in serving its communities. The hospital's community benefits program is comprised of community health outreach, occupational health, intimate partner violence, elder adult well-being, and child/adolescent health. Activities include the Health At Work program with City of Newton employees, the Matter of Balance fall-prevention program for elders, and the Discovering What's Next community collaborative, a program to help adults successfully manage the work-to-retirement transition.
Newton-Wellesley has been active in the arena of domestic violence for over 15 years, beginning with the establishment of a Domestic Violence Prevention Council. The hospital has also been a long term partner of The Second Step, a transitional home for survivors of domestic violence and their children. The hospital added a full time Coordinator for Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Prevention in 2008.
The hospital also works very closely with child and adolescent health, focal areas that directly support United Way's goals for the development of children and youth. Newton-Wellesley has supported the implementation of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey throughout its service area. With the Newton schools, Newton-Wellesley initiated Project Interface to address the mental health needs of school-age children. The hospital has been an active supporter to the Waltham Partnership for Youth, the John M. Barry Boys and Girls Club, and the Brigham Community House in Newton.
Newton-Wellesley and its employees also contribute financially to the work of United Way through an annual fundraising campaign and support of the Healthcare Leadership Breakfast.
