How Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary Lives United
Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary was founded in 1824 as a "charity clinic," and has been a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School since 1866. As a teaching hospital, their mission is not just to treat patients, but to discover new treatments and to advance knowledge in its field.
Mass Eye and Ear's concern for its community is not restricted to its clinics and operating rooms. In reaching out to help others in the community, Mass Eye and Ear faces a challenge: How does a small Institution with limited resources leverage its unique assets for maximum effect?
- Collaborating with others. Mass Eye and Ear frequently partners with organizations like the Harvard Medical School and the Conference of Boston Teaching Hospitals for programs such as PRISM (science and math for middle schoolers) and an annual Community Health Fair at the State House. The hospital also has a close working relationship with the Vision Coalition in bringing programming to a variety of community groups.
- Taking advantage of special one-time opportunities, like a hearing conservation program at the Smith Leadership Academy including the performance of an original rap song, "Turn It to the Left." The session was featured by National Public Radio.
- Developing a deeper relationship with a single partner. Mass Eye and Ear adopted the Neighborhood House Charter School and has provided ongoing hearing and vision screenings for all its students.
- Encouraging philanthropy among its doctors, nurses, and staff. Through their annual campaign, Mass Eye and Ear employees have contributed over $136,000 over the last five years in support of United Way's work with children and families.
United Way pursues a vision of community where children enter school ready to learn, young people graduate from high school with options for the future and families have the tools to provide for and nurture their children. Undiagnosed and untreated hearing and vision problems interfere with children's ability to learn and parents' success in the workplace. The Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary Lives United by sharing its special gifts with children and families who would not otherwise have access to the world class care its staff provides.
