Examples of Winning Youth Ventures
"Living for a Reason" puts on workshops for youth, by youth, on different topics such as responsible spending habits, building resumes, finding jobs, and relationship tips. Each workshop is facilitated by youth that have experience in these different aspects of life.
"Play for Peace" organizes three 5-on-5 basketball tournaments throughout the year. The catch is that every team member playing in the tournaments must participate in an anti-violence workshop before they play.
"Keeping it Fresh" grows produce in local community gardens, delivers it to restaurants and bodegas, and sells it for a very affordable price. Through this venture they aim to keep Lawrence residents eating local healthy produce.
"Lawrence Fashion Weekend" gives young fashion designers a chance to get exposure in the Lawrence community. Two times a year, this group of youth host fashion shows that exhibit the young talent in this art form coming from the Latino community in Lawrence. All of the models and designers are young people from Lawrence who have an interest in the fashion scene and who are looking to get some real world experience to jumpstart their careers.
"Start Simple Eat Well" offers cooking classes to high school students and young adults in the community that teaches them healthy, easy, cheap recipes that they can make for their families. The venture helps the community by teaching young people basic culinary skills to promote healthy lifestyles.
