Local Golfers Tee Off to Provide Local Youth with Summer Programming

06/18/2009

BOSTON – On Friday, June 19th, Lantheus Medical Imaging CEO Donald Kiepert and nearly 150 community leaders will come together for the 15th Annual Invitational Charity Golf Tournament to support Merrimack Valley youth through United Way’s Summer Experiences in Greater Lowell initiative (SEGL).  The Golf Tournament, which raised $31,000 last year for youth programming, will help kick off summer at Townsend Ridge Country Club in Townsend.

Since 2000, Summer Experiences in Greater Lowell, or SEGL, has provided children in our community with enriching summer learning and recreational experiences when school is closed. Last year, SEGL provided approximately $100,000 to 16 Greater Lowell agencies, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Lowell, Boys and Girls Clubs, Community Teamwork, Inc. the YMCA and other local organizations. Through SEGL, more than 3,000 children participated in quality summer programs, developing leadership, social and academic skills that will empower them for life. Recipients of this year’s SEGL grants will be announced in June.

“This year, the summer program at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell is expected to serve record numbers due to the challenging economy,” said Michelle Hatem Meehan, President.  “With the help of the Greater Lowell business community’s support through the United Way’s Summer Experiences in Greater Lowell, we will be better suited to offer high quality programming in our safe and caring environment.”
