Helpline calls reveal portrait of a community still in recovery

United Way reports that Mass 2-1-1 usage has surged by nearly 45% since last fiscal year

BOSTON - Despite indications that the economy may be rebounding, new data from Mass2-1-1, United Way's statewide helpline for health and human services, reveals that calls for help from Massachusetts residents continue to grow. In 2009, 2-1-1 answered more than 50,000 calls for help in Massachusetts. Comparison data measured over the fiscal year (July 1 - June 30) shows a significant increase of nearly 45% in call volume across the Commonwealth between FY2008 and FY2009.  read more »

Changes to eligibility may mean more money for working families this year

BOSTON - As part of a larger strategy to help families hit hard by the recession move from crisis to financial stability, United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley announced today that is investing $125,000 to raise public awareness about changes to the earned income tax credit (EITC), which could result in more money for working families this tax season. Created in 1975, EITC is a federal income tax credit for low to moderate income individuals and families.  read more »
