The Walk a Mile Experience

Volunteer to educate others about poverty in Massachusetts

What is life like for a family living at or near the poverty level in Massachusetts?

The Walk a Mile Experience provides participants with the challenge of performing the day to day tasks needed to sustain a family against the backdrop of poverty.

Each participant is given a role. Some families are newly unemployed, some are homeless, others are single parents or grandparents raising their grandchildren. The task of the "families" is to provide for basic necessities and shelter during the course of four 15-minute "weeks."

The experience lasts from one and a half to two hours. It includes an introduction, the exercise, and a debriefing period in which participants share their perspectives.
